    Time Without Consequence

Past the days keep turning into night ...

A few years ago I was going through counseling and learned a lot about how to care for myself. And in the midst of our fourth move in a year, I've learned that it's more essential than ever. I've discovered that there are certain things that I need in my life that keep me going, these concrete things that I hold onto when life does not offer them so readily.

Music is my staple. I surround myself with a soundtrack that alternately allows me to feel and expresses things better than I can, or allows me to escape a little. Or, have fun. My current mainstays are Alexi Murdoch, Eisley, Nick Drake, and Regina Spektor.

    French press coffee. Mmmm.

Prayer. The Orthodox has these morning prayers that I (try) to read through every morning, that include prayers and psalms, and when I make an effort to get up and pray in the morning, the rest of my day goes much better.

Yoga. I can finally bend over and reach my toes! But no other exercise has worked so well to provide a center and focus to my life.

Reading. I like to read a few things at once, so currently on my list are Newsweek, InStyle, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, and Boneshaker. Nothing like a good combination of politics and world news, style, magic, and a steampunk zombie airship novel.

What do you find that you hold onto to center your life?

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel

Another year, three moves later, and I'm sitting looking out on new snow falling in Anchorage, our new home. My girls are contenting themselves with playing in a box, Alexi Murdoch is serenading my morning (or what feels like morning in the dead of Alaska Winter at 12:49pm), and I'm almost two-thirds of my way through Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.

It's been a crazy last little while, but soon I will begin blogging anew, illustrating, finding inner peace every day, and continually become more self-aware. These are my goals for the new year.

    oh yeah, and laugh.

i think i should have gone to art school ...

So this week, well, last two months for that matter have been really crazy. Two months ago, I lost Liam from my daycare because his dad lost his job. A week ago I found out that Zenna will be leaving our daycare and moving to a center. It's been such a loss for me, basically losing my whole job in six weeks and having to start from scratch.

I do have a new little boy named Max, who is just the most delightful 10-month-old in the world. We call him Maximillian a lot, since that's his full name (there are just so many nicknames from that!). But like Chris said, lightning can't strike four times, and it's taking a lot more work to find someone to watch this time.

I've been putting all my leftover energy into my art, sketching a lot for my children's book, and today searching in the 'artists' section on Craigslist. I already have one woman who wants me to design a robot tattoo for her, and a fundraiser through the Audobon Society of Portland, where artists paint/create/arrange a 6" x 6" canvas for charity. I'm really excited about both, because I think I'm much more of an artist than I ever gave myself credit for, and eventually I would love to be able to do it for a living, or at least a small living on the side. Plus, if these things go well, I'll have some examples for a portfolio.

Anyway, I'll definitely post the final products on my blog when they're finished.  You can see more about the fundraiser here ... http://www.audubonportland.org/support-us/fundraising-events/waf/sixbysix

P.S. We have some wicked awesome records now ... Iron and Wine, Simon and Garfunkel, U2, and The National .....

    a completely new sound ....

so our good friends Rachel and Reid gave us their record player and receiver since they bought new turntables, and Chris and I are in a whole new world. The sound quality is incredible, and we also found two children's records at Goodwill for 1.99 each. We've spent the last two days listening to Mary Poppins and Pinocchio over and over again.

You'll have to excuse the picture quality, we don't have a USB cord yet for our camera, so these are photobooth ....

There is a possibility I'm getting a little sick of these already, which means we'll have to buy some more. *sigh.*

And ever since our beach trip three weeks ago, we've all been sick. Alex and I have been the last ones to get this cold, and it's pretty much incapacitating.

p.s. go to this website ....

About Me

  • I am a wife of a really studly guy and a mom of two beautiful girls. If I had a day to fill with things I love, I would go to the beach and play in the sand with my daughters, make stumptown coffee in our french press, journal, run, read a really good book, go out with girl friends and have a drink, have a good talk with Chris, and watch a really good movie snuggled on the couch while the girls sleep.
